Back in July, Lorelei (who, btw, invited me to be her roomie at Philly Bead Fest this past weekend, and I am SO glad she did!) had a giveaway on her blog for 23 spots in her Shadowbox Challenge, and I was one of the lucky winners! The wonderful enameled shadowboxes were created by C-Koop Beads whose booth I had the pleasure of visiting while at Bead Fest. As soon as I saw the shadowboxes, I envisioned various miniature scenes in them. Some of you may already know that I used to work at a dollhouse shop, and I made dollhouse miniatures for many years before I made jewelry. I think this is why the Shadowbox Challenge really appealed to me.
As usual, I waited until last minute to work on mine, but an idea came to me almost immediately. I remembered a small 3-D owl bead that I had picked up in NC and chose to use it in my scene. I also found a tiny Vintaj moon charm in my stash and decided to do a scene of an owl in a tree with the moon in the background.
I used very fine 28 gauge wire to wire the owl to a branch that I picked off one of our bushes. My shadowbox came with two holes on top and one on the bottom, so I strung the wire through the top holes to make a loop to hang it from and dangled the moon charm from one hole. At first I dangled a brass star charm from the bottom hole, but then decided to use a glass leaf headpin by Anne of Gardanne Beads (who I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with in Philly also) instead. I think it looks much better.
Thanks for checking out my design! Now go see all the fabulous creations from the other 22 participants! I can't wait to see all the creative designs.

This is such a great piece. The owl is so super sweet. You made a really adorable scene :)
What a lovely pendant! And of course, it goes perfectly with your blog :)
Love the little details in your shadow box, and I agree the orange silk was all it needed.
FANTASTIC!! OMG! Cannot believe I didn't think of adding an owl to my shadowbox. I have one more, maybe I'll do something with it with an owl. I love the orange and green color palette. I love the Fall season too. This is so great Lisa. Thanks so much for participating. Feel free to add your photos to the Flickr group I created for the participants: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1740275@N20/pool/
what a sweet little owl! wait to go!
What a sweet piece. I love how you placed the owl on a tiny twig. I love the orange silk too!
I love it! Great owl on the branch. And the orange really puts me in the mood for fall.
Love your fearless use of color! Great miniture collage too (I bet lorelei loved that owl:)
So cute and the colors a perfect for fall!!
Love your idea! It looks like the owl is in the forest!
What a great job! Perfect!
This is great. Using the branch from your yard is such a clever idea...and I love anything with sari ribbon.
So adorable! Love that you added a bit of nature inside. A perfect use for Sari ribbon!
So glad you decided on the Gardanne leaf - it makes a nice weight/balance. I am envious that you had wee bits that fit. I resorted to making my own, yes, I am a little OCD!
I really, really love this miniature scene. I like the fact that you can see the box colors in the scene, and I am just in love with the color of that silk! Awesome design!
This is a gorgeous piece! I love the combination of the green shadow box with the orange sari silk - couldn't be better! And that owl is super cute too :)
that dangle was the perfect one
Very sweet. Love the owl!!
Very sweet. Love the green and orange and that owl is adorable.
Great design love everything about it. The silk ribbon I agree was all that was needed and it reminded me of a fiery sun set.

Beautiful necklace! I really like how you created a whole scene in the box.
LOVE it! Owls are a particular favorite!
What a great piece! The colors, the textures, the scene, the mixture of nature with the man-made materials. Very nice!
Love the scene you created in your shadowbox!
What a cute pendant! :)
I love the look of that little owl living in the box.
I too love Fall. It's my favorite season because of the explosions of color in the trees. Here you were worried about being too Halloween...and I flat out did it. LOL! Nice work! (And of course I love that orange/yellow sari ribbon!)
Also, I liked reading that you work with miniatures. Everything seems so magical when you work with tiny bits!
how pretty! I love the orange and green!
very nice! I love seeing what everyone came up with.
Great scene and nice combination. Love the enamel showing through in the background too.
it's like a little story- woodsy and even halloween-y! cute.
Very cute!
Very creative! Love the colors!
